How to Create a Great Pickup Line

By Britt Dussault

Creating a great pickup line is like assembling the perfect head-turning outfit. Environment, confidence, and badass sex appeal…three components that need to be on point for you to look and feel like you’re bringing your A game. The construction of a pickup line is no different. It’s also just as fun.

A pickup line is nothing more than a conversation starter. An icebreaker. It’s the proverbial foot in the door, and ladies, it’s time to dress up that foot.

Use Your Environment

Your pickup line is going to sound less like a line and more like a genuine conversation starter if it relates to something you and your potential date have in common. Assuming you’re strangers and you’re not a professional profiler who can pick up minute details, your environment is what you have in common. Use it.

Sports bar? During Sunday Football, jokingly ask which team you should be rooting for. His answer is either going to be the team of his home state (follow up: “So what brings you to ——?”), or a different team, for different reasons. Feel free to ask about those reasons, but save any in-depth questioning for the commercial breaks.

Public park? Pets are the ultimate icebreaker, so introduce yourself to his pup, and then introduce yourself to the owner.

Running? Ask for recommendations for other places in the area to run. Casually invite him to show you sometime. Pickup game of [insert sport of choice]? Either you’re asking to be on his team, or you’re inviting him to be on yours.

Dance club? Small talk can be tricky because of the music, but if you’re both wallflowers, now might be a good time to swap awkward dance stories. If you’d rather be on the dance floor, tell him you’re a dancing queen in need of a partner and wow him with your dance skills. No dance skills to speak of? Say you could use some practice…and would he like to help?

Be Confident In Your Delivery

The best pickup line is made up on the spot. Or at least it sounds like it was made up on the spot. I’m all for a little bathroom mirror pep talk, but don’t spend so much time rehearsing your opening line that it sounds rehearsed. If your nerves are making a simple “Hello” sound like a cheesy one-liner, then humor is your best friend. Laugh at yourself.

“Yes, I did just use a pickup line on you and I know it. But it worked, didn’t it? I got you to talk to me.”

All that can be conveyed in a self-deprecating laugh as you shake your head at your own idiocy. Throw in a little bit of a blush if you want to look especially adorable. Either way, the guy you just tried to say hello to is now going to know two things:

1) You were brave enough to use a pickup line on him.

2) You’re interested in him.

Isn’t that the point? ;)

Just Do It

You’re rocking a fierce outfit and can throw down a pickup line with the best of them. You’re bringing your A game. You’re hot.

But none of that skill or sex appeal is going to do you any good if you don’t have the confidence to walk over to that guy and say, “Hello.”

Sure, you can come up with the perfect opening line and you’ve figured out the happy medium between mirror rehearsal and spontaneity. Even the cheesiest of one-liners is now your best friend, because you’ve learned to deliver those lines with an embarrassed laugh and some strategic lash fluttering. But you’ll spend the entire night alone, crafting pickup lines in your head, if you don’t get up and actually use those lines.

There is ice and it needs breaking and no amount of prep time is going to prepare you for that moment when you strike up a conversation with someone new. It’s exciting, it’s nerve wracking, and it takes a lot of bravery and confidence. It can be done, though. And even if the idea of coming up with a pickup line that will be passed down through the generations sounds great, there is a timeless line that will see you through any scenario in life.

“Hi, my name is…”

What pickup lines have worked for you?

I always just smile and say hi. But I really like the point about using your environment. It’s true, it’s what you have in common with a stranger.
