How to Make Small Talk

Last night, during an ice cream craving, I stood in front of the freezer section at the supermarket, studying options. A guy walked up and stood to the right of me.

“What’s your favorite?” I asked.

“Dulce de Leche. Do you like caramel?” He asked.

“I do,” I replied. “But I’m craving dark chocolate. My favorite isn’t here.”

“What’s your favorite?” He smiled at me. His straight white teeth seemed to sparkle.

“Haagen Dazs White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle.”

His eyes widened.

“I love that one!” He said.

“But I think they stopped carrying it,” I whined.

He reached in the freezer, grabbed Dulce de Leche and dropped it in my shopping basket.

“Try this. You’re going to love it.”

I smiled. I was already loving it.

In what situations have you found it easy to make small talk and ultimately exchange numbers?

xoxo,

FD

Grocery store! The look of bewilderment is an easy entree :)

This is very interesting. I have never met anyone at the grocery store! Although I am excellent at making very friendly chatty time with the checkout clerks and baggers whether they want it or not (usually I find the do NOT), I am very focused and closed while cruising the aisles and filling my cart. Between trying to remember the whole shopping list, and seeking out items that suit my weirdo dietary requirements, I treat grocery shopping like a time-sensitive solo mission impossible. Head down, New York City walking pace, no-nonsense, take no prisoners type of thing. Also I talk to myself the entire time (it’s called Intense Concentration), which is probably a little intimidating/scary. Maybe I need to relax, slow down, enjoy the process a little more and open myself up to a few more opportunities?
